What is Search Engine Marketing (SEM)?

Search Engine Marketing relates to any form of advertising on search engines such as organic work such as Search Engine Optimisation (SEO), paid advertising such as Google Adwords and Re-Targeting and other search engine related services such as conversion rate optimisation and other digital work.

Some in the digital industry wish to term SEM as paid advertising and SEO as organic advertising on search engines and although this is helpful it is not entirely accurate. In fact many ‘SEM’ agencies are simply PPC companies and do not cover SEO and vice-versa.

It is very helpful to have a clear difference between paid and organic processes and the work that generates results from these mediums. PPC and SEO are very different, a bit like electricity and gas, they require a different skill set and so SEM can be misplaced within business. This is a real danger and can account for much wastage in business.
